Why does my peugeot brake pedal push down with no braking effect but right at the end if pushed hard works?

Ive got a 1970 peugeot 404 which has brake problem. i push the brake and it goes down about 5cm with no braking and then at the end of the travel if you push hard it stops the car suddenly. Please help!|||Now I dont know about a peugot, but just about all american cars have a mastercylinder that is divided from front to rear. I had the same problem in my ford, and it had a broken front brake line. The back brakes worked fine, but you had to push the brake all the way down to use the back brakes. All the fluid had leaked out of the front, so it didnt use them.|||Because one of the two reservoirs in your master cylinder is empty...the brake light is on too? Thought so...

You'll have to have it looked at to find the leaking wheel cylinder/caliper, do a repair/brake job, and then bleed it a certain way to re-center the balance valve...

It is not safe to drive now.|||Yes I agree with mike, but it can also be power break booster bad or leaking vacuum hose.|||as mike said, check the calipers and resevoiirs... might also want to check the rotors and pads as they will most probably be worn down as well.

however most likely its a small leak so replacing the hoses, fluids and pads should fix the problem.
